This sweet and sour sauce is tangy, lightly sweet, and perfectly balanced—just like your favorite takeout version, but made with real, simple ingredients. No corn syrup, no artificial colors—just a clean, flavorful sauce that comes together in minutes.
It’s smooth, glossy, and works for everything from dipping chicken to tossing with stir fry. If you’ve made my sesame chicken or sauces before, this is one of those staple recipes you’ll want on hand because it instantly upgrades any meal. It pairs perfectly with fried wontons and crab rangoon.

Ingredients
Please see recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full recipe details.
1. Maple Sugar
This is what gives the sauce its signature sweetness—without relying on refined sugars. Maple sugar adds a deeper, more balanced flavor compared to white sugar, with a subtle caramel note that pairs perfectly with the tangy ingredients.
2. White Vinegar
The key to that bold “sour” flavor. It brings a clean, sharp acidity that cuts through the sweetness and gives the sauce its classic sweet-and-sour contrast.
3. Ketchup
Adds body, color, and a mild tomato sweetness that rounds everything out. It also helps create that familiar takeout-style flavor—just with cleaner, gluten-free ingredients. I prefer this brand.
4. Water
Helps thin the sauce to the perfect consistency so it’s smooth, pourable, and easy to coat chicken, meatballs, or veggies without becoming too thick or overpowering.
